What an exciting project! I teach writing in an MFA program and am always piecing together short texts of this kind to offer students; I look forward to sharing your book with them.

Thank you Robin! That's great to hear. There's such a growing interest in climate and environmental writing at colleges and universities right now, and my hope is that the book will be useful and inspiring for a variety of students and working writers.

Sarah Rose, How amazing that WVU Press is supporting your work, after WVU's knockdown last year of anything that hints at humanities/complexity. I'm so excited for you, but also worried for you. (Is this a sign of codependency? Ha. Or good instincts based on institutional double-speak?)

Re: speaking out against the current dismantling of democracy, in our area each week many people are meeting together, and the attendance is ever-greater, from my 1st meeting where 150 attended; to 253 the next week; to 350 the following week. We are now Mountaineers Indivisible and today we are giving Musk a pink slip in front of the Morgantown courthouse. I have found strength from being in the company of others who are furious about what is happening and can't stand to sit by. I hope this heartens you.

Meanwhile, at my farm I'm waiting for the kestrels to return. We've vented their nesting box and placed a temperature data logger inside.

Yes, I've read about all the cuts, and big turnover at the press too... It seems to me that the current staff at the press are wonderful and visionary, and I love the kinds books that the press has been putting out. I'm heartened to hear about your growing coalition there in WV! That's wonderful.

Very exciting. Indeed, we need stories of resilience and connection and renewal of our relationships with our more than human kin. Love the idea of a craft book to guide such explorations. Congratulations on your book deal! In addition to writing climate/nature fiction, I teach architecture. Our students are as hungry for creative ways to engage in these big questions as writers are. I feel I owe it to them to provide guidance, even as I wrestle with the questions myself.

Climate writing and architecture is such an interesting (and I imagine fertile) combination! It's great to meet you here, Julie, and I look forward to following your work as well.

Hi Sarah Rose,

Your project looks awesome--and perfect for the time we live in! What an exciting book; I wish you all the writing challenge/joys when working on it.

My friend, Christine Benner Dixon and I co-wrote a creative writing craft book "Millions of Suns: On Writing and Life" which came out from the University of Michigan Press last year. We are working on a nature writing craft book for them right now, finishing up the last chapters. It's working title is 'Yellow Afternoons" from an Emerson quote. It's not covering exactly the ground that your book is traveling, but I think, when they both come out, they would make exciting and inspiring companions. Maybe, down the road, when that time comes, we might do some readings/ workshops together? Happy Writing to you!

What a wonderful project, Sarah Rose. I love it. I must say though that I am not a big fan of targets and blow guns. But I guess survival is worth examining and creative thinking and writing and doing are foundations for survival, at least for many of us. What a lucky boy am I to live in Durham NC.

Yes, haha, blow gun wouldn't be my personal choice either, but it's hand-eye coordination, a feeling of accomplishment, and a reason to spend hours in the woods! Coincidentally, Brandon and I watched an episode of Vikings last night (we've been into the show off and on the past few months -- there are a trillion episodes) and the Sami were making very effective use of blowguns.

I can’t wait to read your book, Sarah Rose! It’s going to be very helpful to my writing. I’ve been struggling with my second book, which will have elements of fiction, memoir, and science.

Glad to have found you! Looking forward to all the wilderment. I've been sending out a poetry ms, the title of which used to play around with Be/wilder/ment. I've changed the title now a few times, but I'm definitely thinking about these things as a poet-herbalist.
